13th Dec 2017 Xmas Walk – Orley Common

Once again our annual Christmas Walk & Lunch was held at the Wellington Inn, Ipplepen.
Jenni and I missed the walk this year and thus were unable to receive my award (see below) for maintaining this website. My thanks go to Norma et al for providing most of the photos this year.

Thanks for delivering it to me this morning Val, and thank you all walkers. It is a much appreciated gift which will get plenty of use.

Val writes:-
On a chilly, damp, drizzly day eight walkers set off from the Wellington Inn towards Orley Common led by Neil.
Despite the weather spirits were high and by the time we reached Orley Woods the weather improved.  Neil managed to navigate us through the woods – the paths quite boggy and slippery in places – this brought us to the edge of Orley Common before we took a circular route back up through the woods.
A visit was made to St.Andrews Parish Church – a very interesting Church with a very unusual tower.  The tower is lit up at night and can be seen from miles away.
Some of the group took a wander around the village which proved very interesting particularly as Anne, lived there many years ago and was able to point out where the old bakery and also the Plough Inn were located – both now residential properties.  Also the Old Coaching House was very interesting.
We then returned to the Wellington Inn to meet up with other members – 16 sitting down to lunch for our usual Christmas get-to-gether. The food was excellent and we were certainly well looked after by the staff at the Wellington.

Norma took some photos on the walk which you can view by clicking/tapping the picture below
