7th January 2009. Exeter Canal

Following England’s coldest night of the winter during which the temperature in Torquay reached minus 4 degs Centigrade, Chris and Malcolm led 14 hardy walkers from the Double Locks pub in subzero temperatures on what now seems to have become the traditional first walk of the year.

Leaving the canal we made our way down to Countess Weir where we crossed over the river and thence by various paths we arrived at Exeter Quay.
Some walkers took advantage of “Ernie’s” caff to warm up before returning along the canal to the starting point.

Along the way we observed the antics of the local youths (why weren’t they at school or working?) as they attempted to break the ice on the canal using large rocks labouriously removed from the canal bank
